Doris, again you did it ,I have never seen a arabian mare but I love Horses and this is a good looking one your details are always so ( no word comes to me :-)))) I envy you using "real "tools.
Alice
the arabian mare is finished !! i hope you like her, she was a great experience for me, as she was very demanding but for now i am happy with how she turned out... as always i used a lot of references, and this time a clay model too, to guide me, but all the time, my creativity was the essential, and the references and clay were merely tools for information. ... more images, and the complete story how she was carved is on my blog. ... please enjoy :-)
Doris, that is a beautiful carving. I posted these comments on your blog where there are more photos. I certainly enjoyed your commentary as you carved.
The head defines this horse as Arabian. I love the tilt of the ears, the focus of the eyes, she is interested in something and headed toward it in a hurry.
The mane and tail of a horse are, to me, the defining part of a carving. You can do all you want with the rest, proportions can be perfect; but, if the flow of these areas doesn’t “look right” it will attract the attention of the viewer and they will not see the rest of the piece as you intended. Your’s is great.
Certainly proportions have to be within reason; but, the look of a carving is far more important than whether or not the head is too long, the feet too big or way too much hair in the mane and tail. You are creating art not replicas.
thank you everyone :-) yes, dan i am really happy with her , she was so difficult to find, i recarved her legs i don´t know how often, just to get the lines in space to express what i wanted to, and i believe it´s there now, making me happy :-) yes, paul the ears, nice you see it, such a small detail,,,but very important to me too :-) doc, yes majestic, that was one of the properties of arabians i wanted show :-) very glad to hear that from you, since you carved already quite a number of beautiful arabians...curt, the hair was so much fun, and i am sure one can see that now ! ... susieq, thank you too, so glad that she looks arabian, i not wanted carve a "general" horse but this specific family of arabians ... ah, matthew, now that is the best comment :-) as i was unsure if it goes well,,,i liked it so much while working, so decided to go for it in the final and not smooth the chisel marks down further. could have done with an extra path or two, no bi deal, but a pity you cannot see her now in real, the light plays amazingly on this texture, it looks like the thin hair horses have :-)
hi kathy and hi evie, thank you both !! ah, evie, sure you can be, just keep carving, and always make your dreams come true, all other takes care for it self !
It is excellent Doris.
I have enjoyed watching your progress and thank you for showing it to us.
Everyone else's comments just make it more clear when I look at it.
I used to have an anglo-arabian, and his moods would sometimes reflect what you've captured.
Great carving.
