Very nice work and congratulations on your sale, If you sit and carve in a publicly traveled area you will have this happen again. I have had it happen numerous times over at our cabin, I like to sit out on the picnic table and carve sometimes a crowd will gather.

Congrats Dale! I think most of us hobby carvers hope to get to that day where this happens to us. He got a good deal - but - you got something worth way more than the $50 as you said. The validation that someone else went out of their way to approach you and ask to buy one of your pieces.

    Cheers!

I am more in your camp John of "oh that's cool" Heck, I may even get someone to say, "Can I have one". But this is a first for the buy situation.

And yes, the feedback is priceless. I have learned a lot here and will continue too.

    Hey Dale,

Congratulations! Not just on having carved such a great piece, and not just on having gotten the $50 for it, or not just even for having bought some nifty new burrs, but also for the great feedback you've been getting from the other posters here on the site!!!

Way to go! Looking forward to seeing more of your work here!!!

    Dale,

I agree with the rest. Good for you and the buyer really did get a deal. I have a hard time setting a price on my work to the point that I haven't sold any carvings yet. I turned down a few people who saw my work at a fly fishing show thatI had a table at. I was there to sell my flies but decided to show off my new hobby of carving as well. I got as much interest in the carvings as I did my flies!

I guess when the carvings start to take over the house then I may have to sell or give them away but right now I find that I'm still too attached to my work to part with anything. I'm still at the stage "Wow, I did that?"

It is a great feeling to know that others like and want your work too

    Dale,

That's a great piece, and what an experience to be approached totally out of the blue by somebody who likes your work enough to part with his hard earned money. I can only imagine how great that felt.

Congratulations, and keep up the good work.

    Dale,

Great job, love the colors in the wood on that piece. The money is great to have, but the fact that your piece grabed his attention really supports your ability to enjoy this hobby with confidence. Heck, I get tingles down my spine when someone justs asks "how you do that". Again, greta job and I wish you many more Sales. Bill

Dale .. great sell .. Alot of carvers still dont understand that learning to carve isnt just a hobby .. its a thing of the past that very few people see much of anymore .. Especially hand carved pieces .. he got a bargain he did

Dale, I have to agree with your thinking. I sold my first carving for $45. They still think it is awesome. It got me thinking I might enjoy this hobby. Last year I sold simple santa bust only about 4 inches tall out of willow a storm brought down for $40 each. Sold one lady $200 worth!
Priceless. Someone thinks I am good enough to pay money for! I fully understand that feeling.
If you find you have too many people wanting your items, you are charging too little. You can always say, at a show, I would get $75 for it. PAUSE. IF THEY FALL ON THE FLOOR, OR GASP, you can always go down since you don't have to travel or pay for a booth. But you can never go up once you've said a price.

But that is just my opinion and what I have experienced in doing art shows as well as art and craft shows.

That kind of was my thinking. Heck, I like it when someone just says I like that!
