  • "Can I buy that from you?"

I was outside my office polishing up this carving and a guy walked up and said "Can I buy that from you?" It totally blew me away. I sold it to him for $50 bucks and had a grin from ear to ear. I never thought someone would actually want to buy a carving from me! He is a piece of diamond willow about 8 inches high and about 3 or more inches in diameter

Congratulations! I'm sure the $50 bucks is nice, but the validation that you are an excellent carver is priceless.

Re: "Can I buy that from you?"

Thanks everyone, I am still smiling ear to ear. He asked me how much and I said sheepishly $50 For me this is a definite hobby. I have no clue as what to charge for something like this. The validation here is as priceless as the $50 as far as I am concerned. So, what should I have negotiated? Any feedback. Remember, I have only been doing this since March so I am not a mastercarver by anymeans, although I do own one!

In my opinion Dale, you were happy, he was happy, it was a good deal then. Just have fun, if you sell an occasional piece ... all the more fun. When you start getting orders... then think about raising the nickle.

I have to agree with Corey, you both got something out of the transaction besides the monetary value. The buyer really wanted the piece and you still have that ear to ear smile. You did good all around. Plus, you have $50 to buy an new knife with.

That kind of was my thinking. Heck, I like it when someone just says I like that!

Dale, I have to agree with your thinking. I sold my first carving for $45. They still think it is awesome. It got me thinking I might enjoy this hobby. Last year I sold simple santa bust only about 4 inches tall out of willow a storm brought down for $40 each. Sold one lady $200 worth!
Priceless. Someone thinks I am good enough to pay money for! I fully understand that feeling.
If you find you have too many people wanting your items, you are charging too little. You can always say, at a show, I would get $75 for it. PAUSE. IF THEY FALL ON THE FLOOR, OR GASP, you can always go down since you don't have to travel or pay for a booth. But you can never go up once you've said a price.

But that is just my opinion and what I have experienced in doing art shows as well as art and craft shows.
