  • nother shelf board carving

This carving is another one made of 3/4" select pine boards, it's 7 pieces wide and 9.5" tall finished with minwax stain and clear satin deft, it's a gift for a friend that's going to give me two big red cedars they are cutting down, and you guys know how much I love red cedar

Nice work Bill. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have taken it for one piece.

      Great job Bill!
Looks like you really mastered the staining process.

That's a beautiful carving, Bill. You have carving shelving boards down to a science. It looks like a single block of wood was used. I don't know who is getting the better deal, you or your friend. Kind of a big win-win for both of you.

Thanks Dicky and Bill, I really like working with the select Pine and am starting to get the hang of working with stain and really like that too.

Thanks Ed, I hope she likes it.

Bill have seen your work with the glue up pine, and they have came out beautiful. With the pine do you any trouble with the hard grain to the soft while carving?

                      Hey Curt,
it's easy to work with and not as much change in grain as we find in our local pines.

I've been using Radiata Select Kiln Dried Pine from Southern Cross Forest Products in New Zealand and bought it from Home Depot. The wood carves easily and if the pale part starts to flake just change
carving direction and it works fine but the dark bands carve like hard wax, clean cuts and looks like burl but very easy to work with ( I pick out boards with the most thick dark bands I can find because it's wonderful to carve). It's easy to sand (no fuzzies) takes stain well without raising the grain.
(Just a note on this carving; the flesh stain is Cherry, the head band and ties are Red Oak and the hair is 4 parts cherry and one part red oak.)

The Radiata Pine grown in California is also known as Monterey Pine and from this link is appears to be hard to carve but I have never tried it so I can't say for sure.

                        Bill,
I have been admiring your work with shelf boards, and am thinking about trying it with straight-grain cedar (for outdoor use).
Do you have any gluing suggestions, or is Titebond with good clamping OK?

                          Thanks Jim,

Titebond III Waterproof wood glue should work fine for outdoor use, that's what I used on these carvings, and lots of clamps (to thin out and hide the glue lines).
