Ok Marci here are the pictures of todays work. I can still feel you tapping the computer and waiting. He he

I wasn't too sure about carving on the corner when I had to quit yesterday, but now that I got to work a bit more, it is looking better.

The detail knife Thomp made me is really getting a work out. I was able to cut under the hairline, make wrinkles in his forhead and under cut the coat flap.

        Re: Biggest one yet

Well, I got the base coats of paint on him. I had to quit without finishing his eyes. When I closed up the shop, he kind of looked like a Zombie with his white eyes.

I think if the rain lets up, I will finish painting his front and start on the picture on his back.

Hope I'm not boring you with his progress.

Wanda he looks great, I am looking forward to seeing him finished and to see what you choose for the scene on his back.
Thank you for sharing the ongoing pictures it gives me answers to how others do things such as burning to enhance the paint. I was on Lynn's site the other day looking at one of his Indians and it had areas that were burned and he explained why he did the burning, then on your Santa I see that you also burn. So by showing your progress I have learned something new that I can try.

          Thank you for sharing

            Re: Biggest one yet

Thank you so much Ken for your comment. That is what I was trying for. I am still rather new to carving and have learned so much from this site. I only hope I can pass on what I have learned. The burning is really new to me but it does enhance the carving and the painting is easier cause the burning stops most of it.

I forgot to add that I have started taking pictures of the paint fronts I use with the carving so if any touch up is needed, I have a photo of what I used.
            Thanks for looking

Thanks Marci. I am glad you like his patchwork coat.

Here is the beginning of the series of how I painted his scene.
No fair going to the end to see what it is!

Here are more in the progression of painting. I hope it helps you with your paint.

Here is the carved down skewer I use to dot the black in the center of the eyes. And a close up of his brown eyes.

Thank you, Dave and Brandant. I think I got more movement in his beard and hair this time and I had fun on the "larger" painting, all except the dog gone lambs and the donkey half way peeking out of the quilted robe flap. I am pleased with the donkey but those sheep...sheeesh!

It is still in very rough shape, but I think you can get an idea of the direction I am going. I wanted movement in this one with the wind shipping up his coat and beard.

I had to stop for the day, Whew bigger is bigger. It is 12" tall and about 4" wide. I will post more when I get to work on it again.
