  • Pregnant woman in garden table

I spent the whole summer entertaining the notion of carving a garden statue. But as often happens I became distracted by other projects, until finally it was an idea who's time had come. We had a mulberry tree on the farm that was growing to close to a barn. The trunk of that tree became the carving material. Mulberry is about the ugliest sickly yellow colored wood you can find. But it was free and does carve. So this my vision ; a pregnant Indian woman kneeling in thoughtful contemplation of the birth of her child. It's made from a single piece of wood. A very sturdy and stable, table. She is designed with outdoor use in mind. A patio table or maybe in a flower garden. She was carved with only chisels and gouges, I'm not a chainsaw carver.

There's nothing indecent about this carving, but she is nude. So just in case anyone finds the human form offensive, I will censor myself a bit.

I have an article on my blog about how I went about creating it and how I dealt with some of the inherent problems with carving green wood, as well as some WIPs. I hope you'll stop in and visit with me. Or at least enjoy these pictures here.

Very nice dude. I am like you not a chainsaw carver but I do employ them. Tool marks left from gouges looks good to me.

She's beautiful! I went to your blog and read the whole article you did. There's nothing obscene about her. Maybe you could carve a mom holding the baby next time.Very cool carving!

Thanks Raven. I've seen your skills and know you don't need me to carve one for you. Thanks for checking the blog.

Don, I appreciate the comment. I was wishing that I had one of those angle grinder carving wheels.
I could have spent more time on the finish, but by the time I whittled my way down to her, I was ready to move on.

Forrest, Thank you. This is the one that was making my hands sore. While mulberry has an unsatisfactory color it does grow so fast that the growth rings are far apart and supplies some nice effects to the carving, I agree.

Thanks for checking her out Dave.

Sharon, thanks for the nice comment and checking out my humble blog. I have thought about the mother and baby idea. Great minds thinking alike.

Matthew, What can I say? Another beautiful piece of your work. I had to go check out your blog to see the rest of her.

                  Mateo,

Beautiful job. It will be interesting to see how the wood ages. I'm betting it will darken quite a bit in a fairly short amount of time.

Wanda, thanks for checking in on me. Your opinion is always appreciated.

Thanks, Bill. I'm betting on that too. Time will tell.

Howard! I'm glad you stopped by for a look. I have been thinking about your super cool bowl. I was thinking I might carve one from a limb that blew out of one of my Maple trees. fill the bowl with some of my mini tagua carvings and put it on the table as a display. But it's hard to know what direction I will go.

Love the carving! Most impressed with the non-use of a chain saw, but the angle grinder would have helped. I never considered drilling a hole in the center of green wood, so will have to try it.

Hey Mateo ,,, Thank you. The bowl idea sounds great. You do very well with wood and the nagurra pieces are awesome. The idea of them displayed in a bowl what a good idea... Here is a bowl I did for the fun of it made from a 3" wide branch, I used the natural curve of the branch for the design. Something along this line may work for you, so the pieces would lay in a row???

Terry I'm glad that you like her and appreciate hearing from you.

joggernot, problem solved? thanks for looking at her.

Howard, I'll have to try my hand at one of those. A trough 1 3/4" wide would accommodate even the biggest tagua carving. Thanks for sharing the good idea. Since I don't have actual bowl making tools, I'll have to improvise.
