I spent the whole summer entertaining the notion of carving a garden statue. But as often happens I became distracted by other projects, until finally it was an idea who's time had come. We had a mulberry tree on the farm that was growing to close to a barn. The trunk of that tree became the carving material. Mulberry is about the ugliest sickly yellow colored wood you can find. But it was free and does carve. So this my vision ; a pregnant Indian woman kneeling in thoughtful contemplation of the birth of her child. It's made from a single piece of wood. A very sturdy and stable, table. She is designed with outdoor use in mind. A patio table or maybe in a flower garden. She was carved with only chisels and gouges, I'm not a chainsaw carver.
There's nothing indecent about this carving, but she is nude. So just in case anyone finds the human form offensive, I will censor myself a bit.
I have an article on my blog about how I went about creating it and how I dealt with some of the inherent problems with carving green wood, as well as some WIPs. I hope you'll stop in and visit with me.
Or at least enjoy these pictures here.
