Just started this one last night, not sure if it's canadian plum or wild cherry. Was not able to fully identify the tree, still working on finding out though. You can see how big it is from my hand in the picture, this is the whole root ball that I have trimmed the roots short. I just dug the thing up and pressure washed the dirt off, made a bunch of spoon blanks and some other pieces for more spirits from the rest of the tree and one piece for a walking stick.

Here are some more pictures, did a small amount of work last night, this chunk is really drying out and man is this stuff hard. It's harder then the rock maple rolling pins i've carved. I did figure out that it is in fact canadian plum, did some work cleaning up the face then I started detail no sanding for him I'm going to leave the tool marks. Started the hair on top of his head if I can get some work in tonight I will finish his hair and face then maybe start the beard. I tried these pictures with a white poster board background hopefully they are focused better.

Let me know what you all think, and be brutal with your critiques I will learn from your words, how to improve the next one.

He looks really good Carl. By any chance have you tried using Rubbing alcohol/water mix on it to make it a little easier to carve?...don't know if that is the right thing to do on a piece that big, but I think that would be something to try. You're doing great..

Kris I have heard of doing that, never tried it though. I am more likely to just keep carving away bit by bit , Thanks for the idea

I just tried it recently on a SMALL piece of hardwood and it really seemed to help. I didn't have a spray bottle so I brushed it on.

Yeah a spray bottle would do the trick I use them on the lathe with various liquids. You can get them at the wallyworld (walmart) for $1 in the cleaning section, they are always near the mops and brooms. I think I seen Harold Enlow doing this with a woodspirit walking stick in a book I have someplace, I'm not 100% on that so no quotes . We just finished dinner and I am heading to the shop, I've got some changes to make to this woodspirit.

Ok did some more work on his face changed it up and tried to round it more, starting to look a little evil... lol. I still need to do a bit more on his face then finish the hair and start the beard. All the turkey I ate is making me too tired to keep carving tonight so I will get back to him in the next couple days. A picture with a small straight edge so you can see just how big this is.
