  • First time out...

...of the 'Welcome Members" forum so please let me know if I have started this thread in the wrong section.

Also, please bear with me as I have less than one month of whittling (if you can call it that) experience under my belt - so, no snickering.

Based upon some instruction and photos in "The Little Book of Whittling" by Chris Lubkemann here is a whistle I made.

I realize it is nothing fancy, but, it works and my 10-year old daughter (and fellow whittler), Alex, loves it.

Oh, by the way, here is the old Camillus 'hawkbill' folder I used to make it -

And, here is a more 'traditional' two-blade Camillus folder I recently acquired, but, have yet to put blade to wood -

I would love any suggestions for books or threads/stickies on this forum where I can be ideas for other (not-too-difficult) whittling projects for my daughter and I.

Thats a good first carving, and the fact your daughter like it..well thats what makes it great. I am jealous that you have a kid that wants to whittle with you..treasure it while you can as they grow and leave all too fast. Welcome to the club of whittlers and carvers.

Neat whistle, Tim. It's cool that your daughter likes to whittle with you. It will make for some nice memories later in life. Nice old knife, too. Thanks for sharing.

Crikey, what more can you ask for? You have a little one that loves your work and that is all the praise a man needs in this world. I think the whistle is a beaut and the knives are lovely, used, and homey. We all have to start somewhere so don't be put off by the unbelievable carvings you see on this site. It is something to aspire toward, not a deterrant at all. Joe.

Welcome to the forum, Tim! This part of the forum, Wood Carving Tutorials - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board has lots of tutorials, most show step by step what to do.

Also, Arleen YouTube - carverswoodshop's Channel and Gene YouTube - whittler0507's Channel both have a lot of carving videos on YouTube - some are simple, and some are a bit harder, but they both show excellent step by step carving instructions.

Neat Whistle Tim!!! Bet you enjoyed carving the whistle almost as much as you enjoyed carving with your daughter! I still have and treasure a little wooden box my only daughter made me for father's day years, and years ago...now she's a grown-up and an experienced craftsperson with much more talen than I'll ever have...treasure your time together! Thanks for sharing your carving with us and photos of your knives...would love to hear the 'history' behind them, so when you have a moment or two, please share them with us and keep us posted on your latest carvings.

I really like that whistle and that is one neat carving knife. I love looking at that kinda stuff.

It is good for the soul to see that you and your daughter share the love of carving. What an awesome bond that you can share with her for years to come.

My kids love it when I carve and have already whittled a bushel each of sweet potatoes.

No better way to spend your time.

Love that first knife! Doubt you can even pay someone here to laugh at your first carving. This forum is full of good folks and ideals and tutorials and you have definetly found the right place to display your first carving!
