      Hello Tito,

Great chess set, great carvings. How long did it take you? Is the pine very hard or comparable to Basswood? Where does the Pine grow that is where are you?

I hope you get online and post more of your carvings.

                Re: Chess carving

The carving itself was about 2 weeks. The hard part is climb the tree, cut the branches, take out a couple of inches of diameter, wait several months until dries. Then carve it.
You can carve 4 to 5 pawns a day.King and queen one day, and so. This is caribbean pine, a genetic made pine for tropical places 40 years ago. My pines were one of the first ones planted.I am alongside Orinoco River in Venezuela, were they are 25 million of these trees and they do nothing with branches, they will just burn them. My cause is call attention about the damage we are doing to the planet and convince people to use this material. In a scale from 1 to 10 I might say this pine is about 7 in hardness. Gets harder carving deepness and in bifurcations , where is better. I will post again. Thanks

Thanks. Why has it to be black or white? The other set is done with another wood, harder, ivory-like, but smaller. Chess is a war game, in war the armies are not always the same size, and if the rules are respected the small one could beat the big one.In the workshops I give I try to teach concepts of life to my kids, and the chess board is a magnificent vehicle.
