I attempted to recreate a carving that my mentor received from a friends family. It is a bust in basswood and a base of black walnut. I decided that a further try is nessessary but in a little larger scale this bust is about 3 inches tall. I was able to make an attempt at the facial features but I need more wood. I don't yet have the feel for miniatures. The second piece is a black walnut calla lilly spoon from the book Carving spoons by Shirley Adler. I am going to work on more of the spoons in her book as training. I notice that I am cutting myself less and less.

Very lovely on the bust. The face is gentle and very symetrical....something that is hard to do.
I love the spoon as well. That finish makes me want to hold it.

I added another one from the spoon carving book. I enjoy being able to finish a project in a few days.

I like both carvings, but agree...you outdid yourself with the spoons! Very nice! I love the way the first one looks and the way the bowl flows into lilly... Very nice, very nice indeed! Keep us posted on your future creations!!!

I appreciate the comments. I am having a good time. I just finished another spoon from Shirley Adlers book. This one is in walnut, a fun design.
