yew love spoon

Good morning! I have just finished this Yew wood Love spoon for some friends of mine. A couple of great people who loved flowers and nature and of course wood stuff I figured that was right up my alley ! So they get a spoon made from my favorite sacred wood, a sunflower to represent him and his incredible height and some sweet little violets to represent her absolute sweetness a.nd her height-which compared to his should be called lack of height Then there is some Lavender-they both work a Lavender farm and I thought it was appropriate! I sealed the ultra perfection of smoothness with my own blend of Olive oil and Lavender OIl. The olive is natural, like I like to keep all my bits, and the lavender not only smells heavenly, it is anti microbial and antifungal...hence the olive oil wont go rancid. Ok! Hope you like it! I am uuber proud of it! As I was carving I kept saying...Dang...Dang! I like It! I actually considered keeping it for me and my house...but that's how you know you have the perfect gift!
Oh! The card is one I created with a great Celtic Lovers image and a bit of history about love spoons on it-It makes for a real nice presentation at shows and people LOVE to know something has some history to it! I can always tell people where exactly that their bit of wood came from and they love that! This piece of Yew happened to have come from a lot my husband was clearing about 12-13 years ago when he used to clear brush for a tree service. He brought me home 2 logs and even milled them for me This is about the last of it! The color is absolute honey and sunset to me and I just love it-I would kiss it...but the whole toxic wood thing tells me that might be a bad idea! It's probably old enough...maybe just a quick smooch...

Thank you guys! They loved the spoon! He is a firefighter and whilst cooking mad piles of food for a training the other day he approached me with a huge hug and told me how fantastic it was! It was so cool!He wanted to know all about it and listened with rapt attention-interested in every detail! I love to carve for people who appreciATE it!

NEITHER! Yew cuts like butter if your tools are sharp enough! And if they are'nt the Dremel makes it a piece of cake! ( cake and butter...I think I must be hungry!) Yew cracks and I have to cut around them, but the cool part about itis that it has superficial cracks too and they and up looking like purple veins in the wood-I am telling you-this wood is amazing! This variety is called Pacific Yew and I LOVE IT!

That is one goregous spoon Keoma! I'm sure your friends will love it, such a wonderful gift for close friends... I see lots of Yew wood for sale up here in Northern Washington and often wondered if it would be fun to carve...now you've got me thinking about trying it out...yours wood looks sooo nice and compliments your carving just perfectly!!!

Great use of symbolism in the piece. I can see why it was hard to give away with all of the heart felt messages embodied in it....but I cannot think of it anywhere but in the hands of those it was carved for either. It belonged to them when the ideas were conceived.

Thats a great looking spoon! Is Yew toxic to work with? I have a large block of it that was given to me years ago and it has just been laying under my bed. I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post. Maybe I'll have to drag it out and do something with it!

OMG! Git it out! for shame! Actually its probably nice and safe! That stuff is wonderful! I think once you start with Yew you will have a whole new carving bug! It is toxic-said that Arrows made of Yew would kill you twice...once from the Arrow...and once from the toxic! It is also where they are finding help for Breast cancer, under the bark. In California, it is a $10,000 fine if you are caught cutting one down! Whoops To me it is Sacred, like it was to many many cultures. It ages so beautifully...as long as you don't chew on it you should be fine " Slips of Yew, slivered in a full moons light" is one of the main ingredients in the Witches Brew from MacBeth Dig it out-give it a go! Because of how dense it is, you can carve really small and really intricate...it can chip and **** you off, but the end result is worth any stress it may cause you-which will be minimal! GET IT OUT! It wants to be used! And make sure you share pics with us!
