Started a new carving today from a lump of Cypress that I thought lended itself to the shape of a Pelican. I dunno, I thought it would be easy until I saw the detail in the bill! Crikey, how to get that sort of shape out of the wood has me baffled. These are the first stages only; mostly chainsaw to this point. Still unsure if I will achieve the result I want. I will take it a little slower and find out if I have the wherewithal to attain the shape I desire. Comments, advice and critiques welcome as always.

Re: Getting back to a decent size.
G'day Don, I think it may have been the scotch or two that made it go awry in the first place LOL. I am feeling a little better about it today. Not much progress as I was taking my time with it trying to get the bill a bit better.

Update pics:
I went much slower today and not a lot to show for it. I just had to try and sort the bill area out otherwise it would niggle me too much. I am a little happier with the way it is turning out now. I think I get to a stage in almost every carving where I just want to toss it. Anyone else get that?

Re: Getting back to a decent size.
For anyone following this thread I apologise for the delay in updates. I have had to place the project on the backburner for awhile as I have been given a brief to produce two carvings for an exhibit next month. I expect to get back to this fellow in a couple of weeks. Will post a new thread then. Thanks for your patience. Joe.

Josef: Don't toss him. I get the same feeling sometimes and all I need to get out of the funk is someone to say they like it. I just saw your progress today so I'm looking at it for the first time. I gotta tell ya, it looks like a proud Pelican to me and I would be proud to say I was doing it. Keep us posted.

Re: Getting back to a decent size.
G'day Tim, thanks for that but, I wasn't going to toss him. I just seem to get to that stage in every carving, then I work through that to march on to the end. I very seldom give up on a carving unless it is absolutely beyond repair or help. Thanks for the vote of confidence though.
