  • She calls him Boogz..

    Hey folks...

I thought I would share this piece I am working on with you. I have not been on here much since my intro thread, but decided to check back in and get opinions on this.

An artist/art instructor teacher has asked me to carve 2-3 pieces for an upcoming show she hosts. Never really considered myself an artist before so it kinda took me off guard, but for her sake I decided to give it a go and see what comes of it. she says I will need to come up with pricing and I guess I am a bit more nervous about that than completed the carvings lol.

Anyway, here is the peice I am working on. Its based again off a character I have been drawing for decades. My Wife calls him Boogz.

I love this character, the design and concept are very modern in flavor and the execution is awesome. I think this will at least make some people take notice of the art who may have previously ignored it. I am very impressed with the backpack (but then again I still always carry mine with my laptop, my Bible, whatever I am reading, and now carving materials), thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the reply. I know its a bit different from the stuff I see up here, but I hope to pick up some of the skill found on this site. This was done with a box cutter as I could not find the carving knife my brother gave me, but Its coming along like I had imagined, so I am happy with that. Still have clean up and to decide on finish but its a WIP.

I too always carry a bag, so i figured the bag should be included too. =)

Looks Anime? My grandaughter is always doodling characters like yours. Very unique. Also excellent work...beginner carver with a box cutter.

Thank you Sharon and Eddy, I appreciate the feedback.

Eddy, I guess it is sort of similar to Anime, but for me it stems more from graffitti styles. Growing up in the Bronx, NYC it's hard for that not to be an influence.

In any case, I have located my carving knives, they do need a bit of sharpening, but Its nice to have them in hand again. I have cleaned Boogz up a bit more and further defined some areas. I guess all that is left now is to figure out how I am going to apply finish.

I have already started to rough out number two, but want to put a done stamp on this one soon.

Great job and I'm impressed with how they came out considering the tools used. I think you should post a pic of the knives. There are many posts where people ask what do I need to get started and this is a prefect example of using what's around. I'm glad you found the knives and looking forward to seeing more. I know you still have some basswood left.

                  Re: She calls him Boogz..

I like Boogz a lot. The people on this forum don't have much trouble with people that carve with a box cutter. All you have to do is look at Lynn Doughty's work and he does a LOT of carving with a box cutter. Sending your knives to Rick at Little Shavers is a great way to get them in top shape and easy to keep that way with only a strop.

Thank You Ken, Gene and Woody.

Ken I am glad I found them too, I knew they will show up eventually, but I don't have to tell you how I am a fan of making do with what you have.

Woody, thank you for the link, I am a big fan of Lynn Doughty's work and have seen a few of his videos. I am very comfortable a box cutter type knife, so I was intrieged when i saw those vids. I really want to get comfortable with sharpening my own knives tho. I have collected knives since i was a kid, but never felt comfortable sharpening them.

Anyway, i ended up painting Boogz and starting another carving, I will post up his current state later tonight and the knives uses @ Geardog's request. I have learned a lot in my short time here, and I am happy to pass on info / pics if it will help someone.
