  • County Fair

Out local county fair will be opening in a few weeks and I've finished a few carvings to enter.

The first is Nature Boy, I posted a picture of him a while ago in an unfinished condition. Now he has 3 butterflies all landing on him as well as a squirrel sitting on a stump.

The next is a larger version of a toad I carved before. The picture is a bit out of focus but it is carved out of cherry with ukibori used to create the bumps.

I also modified a design by Laura Irish and created "A face in the leaves".

    I hope you enjoy them.

Nice work, Paul! What did you use for the wings on the butterflies?

                Re: County Fair

Claude: I used tupelo for the wings. I seem to be able to get it thinner without it cracking. I tried basswood but the grain lines were too weak when you get it thin enough for the wings.

If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Let us know how you do at the fair. The best part of competing at all is meeting the other carvers, so I hope you allow time to just hang around during drop off and pick up hours to see everyone else's work and meet them.
I really like the work that you are entering. Good luck with the entries.
My favorite is the woodspirit because I love the colors you have used.
