I finished this little crow this week.
It is carved in basswood, and I used a water color stain on the crow.
I am actually pretty pleased with him. He has the attitude I was going for.

Love it! That ruffled neck feather was what I couldn't achieve with my stylized carving - it's one of the key definitions of a crow.

Howie, your crow didn't need the ruffles, but I know what you're talking about. Mine needed to be just a wee bit evil, or wary. Yours is whimsical and with the size of the head in proportion to the body, you nailed it.

Herb, get on it. Crows are fun to carve, and the color is easier than any bluebird you will ever carve.

L.P., good to hear from you. I hope you're doing well. I watch the crows around my place everyday, and after nearly 20 years of them watching me feed birds, chickens, peafowl, horses, dogs, and everything else that gets into the feed bins, you would think they would
trust me, but no. I get that face from everyone of them.

Hi Nomad, and thanks for the comment. I don't know if it is obvious, but the "frame" is carved into the same piece of wood as the crow. all one piece.

I've done a whole series of relief carvings that incorporate the frame as well. They have turned out well for me. I carve some of the frames with vines, and gild them sometimes too. I find that a simple angle difference along the edge makes a visual difference that is pleasing like in this one. Thanks for noticing.
