    Re: Manatee (WIP)

Beautiful carving so far. I love the soft wrinkles you have given him. In Australia we have an Aboriginal based name for them...Dugongs, or as Larry mentioned...Sea Cows. I have toyed with the idea for awhile about carving one, but alas, I am at a point where I cannot carve any more until I rid myself of a few. I will just have to satisfy myself in viewing other's for awhile. Joe.

Well done! Makes me feel like grabbing a mask & snorkel and heading down to the glades. Thanks for sharing so many pics.

          Re: Manatee (WIP)

OK, Here are some more progress pics. As you can see, I have left a piece of wood on the bottom of the manatee to insert into the base, to add strength when I glue it. I also have done the same with all of the "kelp".

More progress. Everything is dry fitted, I will be gluing it all together after I lacquer.

                Re: Manatee (WIP)

Thanks for the steady stream of WIP pictures. Also, it's encouraging to see the clay model. I must do more of that. The placid facial expression is exactly what comes to my mind when I saw the thread title.
As for the marine plants, looks like big sea grass to me. Even though kelp/Macrocystis(?) is more of a cold water plant, sea grass certainly is manatee food.

Beautiful work, Bobby! The finish is great, and I think the aquatic plants add a lot to the carving.

It answered some questions I had, but had not answered.
