Very well done! I like all the variations you have used.

May I make a suggestion as an ex chess club teacher? The knights in your third set are a bit too tall, this can make playing a challenge as it can disrupt the sight lines in a game. Is it possible to shrink them a bit? For a casual over the table game, it really would have no impact, but for a more serious game, it may. K>Q>B>KN>R>P.

Have never carved a chess set, but after seeing yours, it has set the wheels turning. Thanks for sharing with us.

Nice. How did you like whittling the sugar pine?

The Sugar Pine was fairly decent. It does have a wide grain, so in tight areas, you need to take you time & have a well sharpened knife. Sugar Pine is a bit harder than Basswood & maybe even a littler harder than Butternut. Would I use it again - sure.

Very nice carving on all three sets. I actually tried to do a set several years ago but after the fifth pawn I ran out of patience so let me complement you on your sticking to it.

Those are really nice chess pieces!
I multi-task my chips too, mulch, compost and little paper bags with some in them so my husband can use them to start fires in the wood stove.

thanks. Since I only use a knife, the hard part is keeping them the same proportion/size. But what the heck - I just sit out on the patio & whittle. By the way - this made a LOT of mulch for the flowers & the cedar shavings went to the neighbor kid's hampster. I'd call that multi-tasking ?

Now on to a board or boards. These are made from Sugar Pine(white), Butternut (black), Cedar (black) & Walnut (black) - all 'rough cut'.
