  • Fancy Bone Chain

I had some bone left over from making my knife so thought id carve a few things. I wondered how difficult it would be to make a chain out of it as its so hard.
Its not all that different from making them in wood really and the bonus is it holds a fine pattern well. Hope you like it.

Excellent work again, I don't understand how you work so fast! Almost too fast for my one-fingered-typing.

More seriously, exactly what sort of bone would someone ask the butcher for. And what preparation is required before carving. I was thinking a miniature lovespoon might make an interesting brooch.

Are you serious? Again? I'm starting to look forward more to see what you are doing than actually sitting down and working on something myself.

Thanks David I used a cow shin bone scrape out the marrow then boil in water for about 3 hours [ keep topping up the water]. Boil again for another 3 hours but this time in water and white vinegar, give a good rince after then leave to soak for a day or two in bleach. [ this will kill off any germs and make it bright white. Hope this helps you...Oh by the way already did a spoon not sure if you saw it.

Great job on the chain! (and the spoon, too!) Thanks for explaining how to prepare the bone. I, too, am amazed at how fast you seem to work. I know small is faster in many respects, but still... wow. very impressive!

Thanks Abitoslo but please dont waste your time looking at my silly little things when you could be carving something your self.

Thanks Ron .....on a scale of 1-10 { 1 being ok and 10 fantastic } in my eyes I just about scrape in with a 1 so lots of room for improvement.

Nice work on that chain, FF! Wonderful detail, and great repeatability (the links all look alike)... Do you do most of the carving with power tools (high speed rotary), or do you do it all with a knife? The reason I ask is that many many many years ago I carved a neckerchief slide out of a round steak bone, using my dad's Sear's version of a Dremel. I tried using a knife, but gave that up quickly...

Thanks Claude I used a drill to rough out the shape of them then hand carved the rest. You need sharp tools and strong hands to it though.
