  • Set of Chair Carvings (WIP)

    Hi Gang,
Here are a couple of pix of a set of chairs I am working on. Not sure yet if I am going to do four or six chairs. They are carved out of eastern white cedar and are high back chairs about four feet high on the backs. I was really inspired when I was at Ridgway this year by a carver by the name of Joe Rego. I wouldnt say that Joe is a woodspirit carver but his faces are absolutly remarkable. I was so inspired that I purchased a chair from him that I gave to my grandson. This is only the start of the carving and is just roughed out with a little detail. So far I have only about an hour of work into this carving. I will update this thread from time to time to show you my progress I have about fifteen carvings going on all at once now I really have a problem concentrating on one at a time. I bounce from one to another but I eventually get them all done. Of course any constructive feed back is appreciated I value your suggestions fully as you know.

      Colin,
Nice! Are they going to be carved from one solid piece? Can't wait to see them progress!

Colin what are you doing in my shop, you must be the elf that does my carvings when I'm not home. Great idea I can't wait to see the finished piece. Wink

I can't really get a full perspective of the wood just yet but they look like they might be right off the sawmill, but I'm usually wrong with my guessing. It's good to see your spirit before the eyes go in which is helpful. Thanks!

Yes they are 3 inch slabs off of a portable saw mill my brother in law has one and he loves to play with it. Lucky for me he also has 100 acres of beautiful cedar that I can have as much as I want. I will post a picture tomorrow if I get the chair finished I will show the profile of the chair also. LOL if you think my work bench is a mess you should see the rest of my shop. I find time to sleep usually about 8 hours a night I also go to the gym for an hour each morning and look after my grandson four or five days a week. If the wife doesnt have work for me to do I carve also between periods of the hockey game and football at the half. I used to have a TV in the shop but I cut myself too much when I try to watch the game and carve at the same time.

Well, Colin, at least you're not bored! Geez....your own sawmill to use "and" a forest full of Cedar to choose from. Life don't get much better than that, unless you're a beaver! I love the bench idea by the way, it would certainly add character to the garden. I hope the shoulder is okay. How's the Grandson's carving coming along?

Before they slip me over the standing part of the fore sheet, let them pipe: "Up Spirits" one more time.

The first chair back is finished all except the staining unfortunatly its raining today so I will stain it tomorrow. Then I will be able to put the chair together on Wednesday. Hopefully I will be able to get started on chair #2 tomorrow as well. Maybe not I have a whole bunch of carvings I really should get finished it always happens to me I get side tracked. I know what else is new.

Colin, I really like those chair backs. Interesting expressions as usual. You keep lifting the bar for the rest of us.

Thanks all for the nice comments I have finally finished the 1st chair and just have to stain it. I have already cut the second chair and should be able to start it tomorrow. I have attatched a picture of the finished product so you can get the concept of the chair. Probably going to take longer to put it together than to carve it.

I am getting a serious case of the "gimmies". I want some chairs too.
Kenny is right, you keep settin the bar higher for the rest of us.
Now I need a brother in law with a saw mill, and some really good wood!
                            Very inspiring.
