  • Ten foot tall Woodspirit

Hi gang I told you I was busy well just finished that maple tree carving and although it was just zero this morning the sun was shining so I started on my giant woodspirit carving. This one is in a huge probably 80 year old white pine. The house owner had to have it removed for safety reasons but left a ten foot stump and called me to carve it. This is a treat, having carved so many maples it is nice to carve a nice soft pine tree. This is day one of the carving all of the carving so far is 100% chainsaw. Tomorrow will be the detail day when I take my mallet and chisels and put some detail into the carving. Using scaffold because it is so much easier than standing on a ladder well worth the rental. I will post more pictures tomorrow I should be just about finished by tomorrow afternoon.

Some people have all the luck. Certainly coming together.
Did you or will you make any relief cuts up the back?

                      Re: Ten foot tall Woodspirit

Thanks for all the favorable comments this guy sure is a big one. As for making a relief kerf in the back I wont only because it would look bad from the house. From my past experience with these stumps is that they never tend to crack really bad, usually just small cracks all around the stump. When this happens I just restain it and it just gives the carving more character. I did some more on the carving today and will post some more pictures later. The Stanley Cup playoffs are starting soon so have to watch the game first.

                          Re: Ten foot tall Woodspirit

Thanks everyone for all your nice comments they are much appreciated. Day two has just about finished him up. No Chainsaw work today all chisel work. I love the way that chisels really finish up and give the carving the clean look. One coat of Sikkens Cetol I Cedar. This is the penetrating coat, tomorrow I will return to put on the second coat Cetol 23 that will give it that warm honey look. Not glossy but not matt somewhere in between. Nothing I love better to do that to go out on a spring day and tackle a big tree. When it is all done there is a pile satisfaction especially when the customer tells me that it was beyond her wildest expectations. That make me feel great probably more so than the payment. Always great to make money doing something that you love to do. I always tell everyone you give me a canvas let me play all day then pay me good money when it is done. You got to love that.

I see that the top is squared off. Would it be useful to taper that and add some waterproofing?
The result is quite the street-stopper.

Unfortunatly I wasent there for the tree cutting and your right it should have been cut at an angle. Having said that I wasent ready to go that high to cut it not to mention that I didnt have a saw big enough to do it. I did however seal the top to stop the elements from penatrating the top.
