I've been wanting to attend the Texas Woodcarvers Guild Spring Round-Up ever since I started carving three years ago, but haven't had the opportunity until this year. I couldn't get away from work long enough to spend the whole week down there taking classes, but I did manage to take a look around, buy some tools, and participate in the whittlin' contest.
I hope I can take some classes next time. I had fun wandering around and looking at the classes taking place, talking to a few people I knew, making new friends, and sitting in the Carving Corner whittling on a few things while listening to the old timers tell their stories.
But the real reason I went down there was to experience the Whittlin' Contest. Being new to this sort of thing, I entered the Novice class. They gave me a block of wood and said, "carve a hat." So I did. And, surprisingly, I won! It's not much of a hat, but I finished it in the allotted time.

First picture is the first, second, and third place entries in the Novice category. Second is a close up of my hat. And the third is the plaque I won.
Rules state that because I won, I have to move up to Intermediate if I want to participate again. That's going to be a challenge.
