  • First Turned and Carved Chess set, White side

This is my first attempt at a turned chess set. I turned all the pieces on my lathe and power carved the knights using various bits and techniques. The knights were clearly the most challenging, and while I'm not 100% satisfied with the results it was a lot of fun. Now on to the purpleheart "black" side.

Enjoy! Comments welcome, the knights were my first attempt at power carving, heck first attempt at carving period! Also you'll see I added a "seal" to the bottom of all the pieces, I figured it's my chance at "immortality"

Thanks again Joe for your horse designs and suggestions, while mine is no where near the photo-realism you've achieved I feel like it's a good first step.

    Off to prep some purpleheart!

Well done on the chess set, a real nice beginning. The knights look great. Be careful carving the Purpleheart, it burns easily, and wear your dust protection. Looking forward to seeing the "black" pieces.

Before they slip me over the standing part of the fore sheet, let them pipe: "Up Spirits" one more time.

Thanks guys. Oh my goodness, you aren't kidding about Purpleheart. I always wear a full 3M mask (Canisters) and my face shield, plus gloves depending on the work (leather for power carving, neoprene for scrolling, none for the lathe).

Anyway, Purpleheart ate a couple of scrollsaw blades during the compound cutting on the knight head. Took almost an hour to compound cut the head (contrast that to poplar and roughly 15 minutes start to finish on the scroll saw). I started roughing it out with the power carver and a carbide bit. That worked better, but still tough going. I think it ate the tip of an inexpensive diamond bit, unbelievable.

Well at this point the stubborn streak has kicked in and I'm telling myself it's all about the journey, as I can see I'm a long way from the destination.

                Not a very good job.
sure your next set will be better.
Just to save you any embarrasment you can send me this old set.
And by the way, you can send the purpleheart set along also, I dont mind.
