I finally found some 5/4" x 6" mahogany and decided to honor one of my alma maters, the US Army. This is the layout and scroll sawed view of the project as it stands right now.

Re: Us army
I got around to carving some on the star and the U and released some of the chain links connecting the U, S, Star and A. This mahogany is very rich wood and holds the cuts very nicely. While it seems like a hard wood, it only carves about 25% harder than bass wood.

Re: Us army
I finally got around to carving the star and most of the A. Links have been released and most of the letters that have been carved have been roughly sanded. I like the look so far, but the wood is a little harder than I first thought. I can, however, still carve everything with XACTO knives.

Re: Us army
I finally carved the R and released the links to and from it. I also have sanded most of the carved project and balanced the project so the most of the carved letters are vertical. I just have the M and Y to go before final sanding and finish.
Thanks for taking this ride with me.

Re: Us army
With my handy dandy dremel with a 1/16" cutting bit, I cut out the links between the R and M and attach a photo of how that looks. I have also posted a photo of the overall project.
I am really appreciating the carving properties of this mahogany and may try other projects with this nice wood.

Re: Us army
I carve with Xacto knives. The inside of the links, I use a small drum sander. I use a Dremel Multi Max for most of the rest of the sanding with 120 and 240 grit. Following this. I use aluminum oxide cloth of 150 and 240 grit with a lot of elbow grease.
Thanks for asking and let me know if I can be of additional help, or if you have any ideas that will help me out.
