  • Bottle Stoppers and Civil War Soldiers

I haven't been here in a while but thought I'd post some of my latest carvings. I want to say a big thank you to Lynn Doughty, Mark Gargac, and Mark Akers for their videos and DVD's. I'd recommend watching them if you haven't. They've help me a lot as I try to develop my own style. I'm thinking of making some of these as Christmas ornaments as well.

    Comments and critiques welcome.

Hey Jim, those are great carvings . I'm really impressed. But the thing I like about them most is the paint job. What did you use? Thanks Ginny

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Ginny, they're painted with acrylic washes. Watch Lynn's video on painting his cowboy head, Carving A Cowboy Bust - Part 10 - Painting The Head on Vimeo. I used his technique for painting. After painting I put on 2 coats of liquid beeswax mixed with linseed oil. I let these dry for 24 hours in between coats. I then antiqued them using Watco's liquid wax with 3 parts clear and 1 part dark. I know there's a lot of discussion back and forth on the type of finishes to use. I tend not to use polyurethene.
