Re: Fire Breathing Dragons
Hey everyone, thanks again for the kind words and support.
I haven't checked in in a while because, well.....I cut off the end of my thumb on the table saw, and maaaaaannn it hurts!!!!!
It's sewn back together but geeeeze....
I pushed a tall piece of wood through the table saw and reached around behind the blade to keep the wood from toppling onto the blade, when the blade bit me.
This is why, you'll never in your lifetime hear the sentence, "Smart like Greg Jones".

Re: Fire Breathing Dragons
DreamDex is easy to work with, and has a really nice grain as well.
Carving a isn't any different than normal wood, however......I'm assuming there's terrible toxins to be found in the polymers they suffuse the wood with, so I absolutely wear a respirator when carving and sanding.

Re: Fire Breathing Dragons
As previously stated very cool. Thanks for sharing.
I dont mind carving Radiata, the main issue is the visibility of the grain on the finished piece. Is the Dream Dex much different to work?

Re: Fire Breathing Dragons
Thanks fellas,
I should mention too, that the horns and spikes on these things are made from moose antler for the big ones, and deer antler tips on the small ones.
The big dragon is a 1 3/4" bore flute in the key of Fm. The smaller one is a 1" bore F#.
Each of them are made from deck wood called DreamDex.
This wood was in a vacuum chamber of some kind, and suffused with polymers. This makes the flute a hybrid wood/plastic flute; it retains the esthetic and working qualities of wood, while allowing the weatherability of plastic, which means it isn't temperamental in inclement weather.
Just sayin'..............

Fire Breathing Dragons
Hey Everyone,
I've been away for a while, carving and making a couple of fire breathing dragons.
There's a tube that runs the length of the dragons belly, from blow hole to the dragons mouth, that blows lycopodium powder over an open flame.
I'll attach a few pictures and a video.
These things are fun!!
