Re: Dragon for my grandson
Nice job on that dragon, Claude. There is a lot of work in that carving, imagine if you would have started with a nice piece of wood...how you made him come out so good with what you had is very impressive.

Re: Dragon for my grandson
Excellent job Claude! Looks like the Gryffin in the Welsh flag (the only flag design in the world that's remained the same for a thousand years by the way).
Two thought for you sir.
1. You mentioned on another post you wanted to see the grain without painting over it.
You can thin the paint considerably so it acts more a stain than a paint, and you get the benefit of both.
2. Instead of superglue to toughen up a punky area (makes for some tough carving afterward) Use a 50/50 mixture of shellac and denatured alcohol. The alcohol penetrates the wood easily and brings the shellac along with it. Great stuff.
Finally....this was an awesome job indeed!!

Re: Dragon for my grandson
Thanks, all, for the nice comments! We had to drive to NOLA this morning (left home at 0600, so we could babysit the granddaughter (17 months) and I could take my grandson to school. Gave it to him before school and he loved it. My son was totally blown away - didn't think the old man had it in him...Actually, not true... my son really does appreciate the carvings I give him and the grand kids... I keep trying to get him to try carving, but he's too busy earning a living right now...

Amazing work Claude! Great carving on a tough piece of wood, and I like the way you blended the colors! I think the cracks actually add some character to the carving!

Re: Dragon for my grandson
Neat dragon. To me looks like it has a strong oriental influence, as opposed to the Norther European dragons...I like dragons but have never carved one. Yous will definitely please the grandson.

You had a good save there Claude. Some of that wood looked nasty.
