My grandson asked me to carve a dragon for him. I tried to buy Shawn Cipa's book on mythical characters, but it was NIS, so I did a bit of searching on the web and found a couple of photos that were apparently based on the dragon in his book. This one is based on the photos.
Carved from a block of cypress, painted with acrylics, 9 inches tall, 6 inches long, and 3 inches wide. If you look closely, you can see the cracks in the wood - cypress is not a very good wood for carving, I'm finding. This particular pieces has lots of growth rings, but it still tends to splinter easily and fine detail is difficult, requiring a fair amount of super glue... You'll notice on the Dragon's left side, the wood has some bad areas. I chose to carefully carve right through them, then used a bit of super glue on the punky areas after carving.
I'll show the finished product first, and then a few selected WIP photos.
