  • Tall Snowman & CandyCane Bottom Santa WIP

At the moment I am carving to Christmas Ornaments.

On the left is a Tall Snowman Ornament. On right is a Candy cane bottom Santa. The bottom part of the Santa is going to be painted like a candy cane.

I like the shape. Different carvings of course, but I want to try the same tall, elongate form. I hope you use really bright, cheerful paints. How tall are they now?

      Thank you Robson!

I am for sure going to use nice bright Christmas paints! I started with 3/4" x 3/4" x 6" Basswood blocks. I got the idea of the shape from carved Santa pencils.

Instead of painting the nose like a carrot, I am going to use the tooth pick trick from the Snowman Earrings WCI magazine article to make the carrot nose.

Robson, Should I carve the lines on the bottom of the CandyCane Santa?

Good size. In my spoon marathon of the present, the blanks are all a little bigger than 3/4" square x 14" long.
Carving the cane? HA! I'd have to do that to clean up the paint squiggles as my old hands aren't as steady as they used to be. Oh well.
Paint it. Look at it for a long time. Then decide which way you want to do it.
I think that the cane part has to be really satin smooth, like the canes I hang on the tree each Festive Season (yes, I do take off the cellophane wrappings.)

So I guess a will paint the candy cane part full strength, out of the tube. The spoon idea is interesting. Have you posted any pics of the spoon carvings?

Those look nice Patty! I'm sure they will look even nicer once they are painted! Personally, I would carve the candy cane on the bottom. It will help facilitate color separation.
