  • Green man

Had to go from the eyes to further defining the leaves below the cheeks. ( I am waiting for a 1/4" spoon gouge for the eyes) As I progress around the outer edge of the carving, the ends of the leaves will curve back more, giving the face more depth......that's the plan anyway!

        Re: Green man

Thanks guys, it is my second wood carving so I am going slow, and often reworking areas to bring out more depth and shadow......this is very different from drawing, oil painting, or doing tattoos!

Working on the lower half of the face now. Chin layout, and large leaf to left of chin is done for the moment, working on balancing the right side leaf.

              Re: Green man

Thank you Lynn, I am fairly slow as I have a lot to learn, I find myself going back over some areas to bring out more detail that I probably should have done the first time. I love the process however, and hope to get a little quicker over time.

                  Re: Green man

Thank you for the encouragement! I got the impetus from Chris Pye's online instruction site. I have always liked the Green man as an image. I am not new to art as I have been an artist all my life, but I am new to wood carving, and I love it!

                    Re: Green man

Everything below the eyes is done, except for the final detailing. The eyes are next, God help me! in the area of the right eye (facing the pic) there is a knot and some unstable wood that I might have to use some thick wax to fill in during finishing, but I think I can get this done.

                        Re: Green man

Eyes and nose are done! The eyes were not the horror show I thought they would be, thanks to Chris Pye's video classes! Now onto the brow and upper leaves, then back cutting.

Some updated pics of the Green man. I have not been feeling well lately so I have missed quite a few days carving. Upper right corner and top center left, then the back cut.

Very interesting process and excellent work. Questions: What is the wood (very noticable growth rings)? What tools do you use most? Do you form the outline of each part (leaf), then shape the surface curves?
