  • Bighorn Ram flute

    Hey everyone,
I just made another attempt at carving a Bighorn Ram flute and block. I made one last year and wasn't thrilled with it.
The toughest part of this thing for me was the horns. I found that by starting with an ironwood branch, the appropriate diameter, I could drill a hole through it, then spiral a thin piece of tape the width of the horn where I need it.
I colored out the areas I didn't want, then cut them out. Turned out to be pretty simple actually. For the block; I drilled a hole into the bottom of the back hooves and inserted a small diameter brass rod, and into the supporting block.

If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Beautiful NAF, Greg. Great expression. How about a closeup of the totem. What key?

Thanks for the props you guys.

Arthur; it's a 1" Pentatonic bore Em. The flutes is quilted maple, and the totem and horns are ironwood.
It plays just-the-way I LOVE them to play!

Totems are gorgeous! I wish I had your talent.

We're watching three of our grandchildren for the summer, two of which I already have playing the NAF. One thing on our agenda (at their request) is for us to make NAFs together. They will be simple in style, but they are the next generation of flute makers in gestation. I'm looking forward to it as much as they are!

Beautiful job, Greg, I really enjoy listening to the Native American Flute and have
                      some CD's of them.

You Flute is absolutely beautiful. I love it. I can't play anything . But if I could learn to play any instrument it would be the NAF. I love the sound of them. Again amazing work. Ginny
