Re: Ringerike style Norse carving
Clayton: I'd like to do a little reading about the history of Norse carving styles. Is "Norse" the equivalent of "Nordic?"
You say that there are 6 different styles. From Pacific Northwest Native carving styles, I realize that there are (sometimes) very stringent rules regarding design elements.
Can you suggest some references for me?
ThanksBrian T

Re: Ringerike style Norse carving
Nordic usually refers to Nordic countries, which encompass Scandanavia, Iceland, Greenland, the Faeroe Islands, Svalbard, the Aland islands and Finland.
Here is some reading on Norse art styles:
Archaeology in Europe - Viking Art Styles
Viking Age art - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurstwic: Styles of Art in the Viking Age
Not so sure if there were too many rules associated with Norse art.
Cheers!

Re: Ringerike style Norse carving
Thanks for the references, much appreciated. Those will be a fun read.
If I can recognize a wood carving for what it is and where it came from, there must be limitations to the design elements in the carvings. Those are what make it what it is.
I'm not a PacNW native carver. I always include design elements which belong to me and not any of them (eg simple, round eye. eg scalloped feathers).Brian T
