Re: Carved Bowl
Nice bowl !
I know you didn't ask for a critique but I feel the dollar bill could be more clean and crisp.

Re: Carved Bowl
I know better than to way in on this but what the heck life is short, go for it all. I too thought the bowl looked awesome with just the outline (1st pick) then saw the finished bowl and thought "note to self if I ever make a bowl, don't reduce the area outside the carving" and really Bif don't you get tired of "great, excellent carving" on your flops as well as those you feel you did an outstanding job on. Just sayin. Larry Wirth

Not saying this is example is a flop, I actually like the bowl-think its something I would like to do, but I thought it was better before reducing the area around the carving.

I think that texturing was on purpose, and adds to the personality. I really like the bowl.

didnt say everything had to match my perception, i wasnt trying to be harsh, funny thing about text responses is you see no emotions and simply imply your own as you read. read what i said again, i just did and i disagree with what u had to contribute... my work sucks and i made it clear i wasnt trying to downplay his work, i like the leaf and tool marks,i was simply saying in my opinion it looks unfinished,, didnt say it sucked,, was a horrible piece,, none of that, simply a nice piece that maybe could be more... how is that not constructive ? you must be a glass half empty kind of person to not see any good in what i was saying... and this is why i stopped posting in these forums so many hard heads afraid to say anything that might offend but soooo quick to bash someone who does... thanks for your super constructive reply there bud....
back to the bowl, again sir dont take what i said as anything like bashing, im just bouncing some thoughts at ya that i tend to NOT get from others, how can you progress in anything without positive and negative input/feedback.. right or wrong just my opinion taken with a grain of salt.. cant be close minded otherwise you will be stuck making santas and only santas and nothing different from santas til you have a million santas and then make more santas... hah santa

Re: Carved Bowl
i love it and would enjoy it on my coffee table... but for as perfect as the bowl is, great turning far better than i could do being a turning virgin the leaf looks a bit messy, was there a rush in sanding? or in flat chiseling? im not trying to be a jerk at all my carvings are at best noobish but what i have experienced in this forum is a lack of constructive criticism. again i love the work i just look at it and think unfinished.. i feel a mess of madwire bashing coming my way but i see talent in your work but i see the same problem i have.. impatience ,,, cant wait to see the peice finished with some color and/or sealant... u sir i admire for taking roads im nervous to venture but humbly encourage you to slow down "saying the same thing to myself with every project i start but i tend to not listen"... again please dont take insult in my comments i mean nothing ill just productive thoughts. keep it up im very interested in your progression... definately someone i can learn from

Nice turning and nice leaf carving. Not the easiest woods to carve in, Maple, but sure is worth the effort. Good job!

Carved Bowl
Just finished a maple bowl with a carved maple leaf. First, I turned the outside of the bowl on my lathe and mounted it ready for carving. Here the leaf pattern has been applied and I've outline the leaf exterior with a V-tool.
After finishing the carving, I remounted the bowl on my lathe and turned the inside, then applied finish. Here are some 'completed' photos.
