That looks good. I have yet to make my first carving. I don't. Have a craft shop near me. I have to order everything online cept the wood. Thanks for posting the picture.

Congrats on the first carving. Practice a lot, by doing it several times again and you will see improvement. Give us a picture and maybe we can help more...also a pic of the knife and we can tell you if it is a chip knife, which wouldn't be a good choice for in the round or deep relief carving.

Yesterday purchased a swiss made carving knife. Today found some small pieces of basswood at local craftstore. Tonight I found a instructural video on you tube , began to watch , would pause and try to make the same cuts on my wood. I finished my first spirit face carving. Well it did not look exactly like the one on you tube , but was close. I only had the knife ( which I read on package after gettkng home chip carver ) not even sure that is correct knife, but I was proud of the piece. Seems it looks better looking at it farther away than holding it in your hand.
