  • Chip carved illusion

While waiting to start the relief of Escher's "self portrait" I decided to do a chip carving like this one by Emma Perlaky that appeared in the MyChipCarving.com E-newsletter. I had a 12" plate blank, so all I had to do was enlarge the photo to fit my plate - Wrong! It was quickly apparent that the "break" in the pattern (where the distortion begins) had to fall where the center recess of the plate begins. Mine was off by 1/2 inch!
So I had to modify the design to fit my plate. This required a lot of analysis as to how the original design was made. It also required drawing the modified pattern on my plate, a real challenge! The chip carving should be easy in comparison.

Neat! as an artist I can draw this kind of thing, but to carve it from wood? Yikes!

Doesn't look all that hard to do, when you break it down. I'm sure yours will be spectacular.

                          Re: Chip carved illusion

I finally succeeded in adapting the pattern to the plate blank I have. It required making new templates for the curves in the distorted part. Now I can begin the chip carving and will share photos with you soon.

Thanks for all the compliments, but the photo at the beginning of this thread is NOT MY CARVING. It is the work of Emma Perlaky as pictured on the MyChipCarving.com site. I am using the photo as the starting point for a new chip carving WHICH I HAVEN'T DONE YET!
