Loom Shuttle

I started this a week or so ago.
It got interrupted when I found the rolling pin, but now I'm back on it.

Butternut Loom Shuttle
14" across, 4-1/2" high
The basic carving is done.
It needs to be reverse stained.
I need to make some kind of base for it to sit in so it can be displayed properly.

On the front, on either side of the love birds, there is space for names should this ever be a gift or wedding present.

The lettering is on the back. The dime is there for size reference.

Finished it up this evening.
Put some reverse staining in, then cleaned it all up and made a little holder for display from a piece of snakewood and some ancient bone. Nothing fancy, but it does the job.

It sure is a pretty piece of butternut.
Mom Nature at her best on this one.

Going to find some interesting looking gold cord or heavy thread to wrap around the openings to add a visual to the lettering on the back.

Still some room on the front to put names on either side of the love birds when the time comes.

I used my computer to choose a good font and get some of the spacing.

The overall spacing is ok, but there are a few letters spread too far apart.
That happens sometimes with computer generated text.

I transferred the lettering with graphite paper, which gives a general impression of its outlines. I spend some time filling in the letters with pencil and adjusting them with a scraping tool so when I'm ready to carve, the letters at least look visually ok.

When I carve, there are things I've learned about letters that can't easily be explained. Just some experience that says to make certain adjustments so they look right. I try not to follow the pattern too much and let my experience help shape the letters to make them look good.

I know, it sounds a little "Zen" but it's the best I got.

Nicely done, love the stain effects, now can you explain to ignorant old me what the heck it is/does? LOL
