First carving/fish ever

I'm trying to incorporate a piece of abalone in everything I do, not a very good piece of wood either but it's my first carving so I'm not to upset about it.

The cracks look like in a good location, goes well with the fish. It doesn't upset me either. By the way what kind of wood is it ?

Darn good first carving there. I never worry about the splits and cracks, just go with the flow.
