  • Sea turtle: Major projects

This is what I have been working on since the beginning of the year. The sea turtle 2 1/2 feet by 2 1/2 will be put on a driftwood log that will have eels, octopus, coral reef and fish on it. The driftwood wood base is also three feet by three feet square. The turtle is in the stages of being finished as you can see one flipper has been oiled to see what it looks like, the rest is still in sanding and finish details. Stage two the driftwood is just beginning and the pics on next page. Sea animals are monkey pod and the driftwood is unknown wood. At the same time I am carving a dragon which will also have a massive base....sort of moving toward a castle and mountain scene...but have not made up my mind will post that later when I get it moving. Both projects will range in the four to five height when finished.

This driftwood I found on the beach and decided that, it was just what I wanted for the turtle. The driftwood was twice this size....and the neighbors had a cow as it was packed in the back of my little Ford Escort, roped in the trunk. I have started power carving it and cut it half.....it has about five days of work in it....as it is in the beginning stage of work. I call this phase two and phase three will be the attachments. This wood is porous but it will be awesome to form into a coral sort of base which will hold all my sea animals, I have two eels that will fit into the holes. I have picture which shows the eels in a table that I made for my project last year....this work will have the same. This wood I will be adding mini wax wood harder, which was in another thread. It is has been raining now for a month and half....and today we went into the jungle to get some more monkeypod for my fish and ect.....it was was a muddy nightmare!! almost did not make it out but I got my wood plus some koa that was not up to power for furniture making....so I am a wet muddy happy camper.

          Are you kidding me?
If you sank that turtle in a salt water tank, I would thought it was real.
          Amazing!
Cant wait to see the finished project.

            OUTSTANDING!
Great detail that is spot on. This will be a great show piece that should generate a lot of future sales.

I have a several requests to do sea turtles, I hope to find a pretty hunk of wood like that size to do it. Are the back flippers done the same way as the front? The front look like they are separate placed in sockets... very smart.
I would love to see tons more pictures of this piece!

I have been considering trying a turtle, but much MUCH smaller, and more exaggerated…think Finding Nemo. This is absolutely amazing work. I can't wait to see more.

                      Re: Sea turtle: Major projects

Thanks everyone, it helps to hear your support. I finally decided to get more serious about my work, meaning stop trying to make money and just see how far I can go with wood carving while I can still walk somewhat and still can move around some. Ian Norbury pushes the wood way past its fragile state and massive detail, ...I love this train of thought, although my style is very different....I love the challenges and working through them. Plus attachments over the years as grown on me a great deal. Greg as you can see the front flippers are attachment when I get them secured, filled, they will look as part of the turtle which is the head, shell, and back flippers. The first tail I did not like and wacked it off....and added an attachment which I half and half like. The front flippers are great as they are portable as they are fragile..... so I do not worry about breaking them because of the constant movement as I shape and detail and re detail each area. Unlike some carvings this one was never secured to a table to work on....as I have to turn the work non stop, he sits half on my lap and half on a low table.

It's all looking great Di - I'm always amazed at the detail you get into your carvings.
