  • Wild Cherry Hawk

A week or so ago I was digging in one of my wood stashes to see what I have stored there. Two of the three are old buildings and open to rodents and such. I needed to get in there before ticks and snakes make this hazardous duty. I was surprised to find this piece. I have it pretty well along and cannot imagine why I did not finish it. Must have had a promised piece or such with a deadline that forced me to put this in storage..

Anyway, it has rested, not quite comfortably (I sanded off most of the bird poop before taking the pics), until I returned to finish it. I carved a similar pose in basswood and painted it, realistic, with watercolor, as a Harris hawk. This carving was turned by a friend from a piece of wild cherry harvested here on the ranch. I know where the rest of this log is located and have asked David (son) to cut it up for me. Hopefully it is this same color red.

No way will this have other than a natural finish. I don't intend to do a lot more with it. Maybe put a little detail in the wing to indicate feather groups, Trying to decide whether to put in eyes are not. If I do, they will be burned in and not glass eyes. Went through this with the recent dolphin carving and will probably just leave the eye socket as they are. Looks like I used a large ball to rough in the base. I like that look and will leave it pretty much as it is.

Paul, that is a beauty of a piece of Cherry and with very little work will make a stunning piece. I would offer a suggestion, not to burn the eyes, but to just carve them. Leave the whole piece natural Cherry. Yes, carve some detail in the wing, feather groups, etc, and detail the head, eyes, beak, etc, but don't burn them.

Just a suggestion, for what it's worth. Finished naturally, the piece will be gorgeous.
