I think if it were me I would remove the one on the right as you look at the owl from these images. If you compare the two images "a" and "b" you can decide which you think is best. To me "b" would be way to far apart.

That is Excellent! I couldn't agree more, "b" would be too far apart. Thank you for the photo editing. That is pretty handy.
I have been following this thread with interest. keep up the good work.
by the way, my very first attempt at a chainsaw carved bear was kept and I would look at it for a few days then realized , he had 6 toes on each foot.
I laughed so hard at that I considered keeping the style as a trademark.

Yes I see what you mean, birds generally have three toes out front and one on the rear. Also the one in the rear comes of the inside part of the foot, so yes they do have left and right feet.

Here is the final photos I think. I did some experimenting with textures on this piece. Other than maybe some more cleanup, this one is complete.
The toes have been adjusted and looks better I think.
This wood was gotten from a woodpile and was not best to carve.
Great job...like the texture, you did well in the chest and belly feathers showing lots of flow and softness to that area. Great face and yes, it does resemble a barn owl. As I said, "Great job... you should be very happy with the results." Merry Christmas James.
