  • Cypress Knee WIP

Hi all, this is my first post! I have lurked for a while and have been very inspired by the beautiful work on this forum. I have not been carving for very long and I only have a couple carvings in various states of completion. This is a cypress knee I am working on. I'm not sure how I want to finish it. It does not seem like a stain would work very well as it has almost no grain visible. I may just paint him when I am done.

Not sure why the images are sideways, any idea how I can fix that?

That is a great Face BGull. I am sure about any finish would look good. Can't help you on the sideways pics, but it sure is hard on the neck.

BGull, Nice flow to your carving, well done. I've only carved four cypress knees. And being one that like the natural grain of the wood, and doesn't like to paint , and to the soft thready texture of the wood (whew) I would just oil it. I like the Danish Oils. They age well and kind of mellow . . .JoeB
PS you can always paint later

BGull, I 'm guessing that your pictures are from a camera phone? Those pictures are always in landscape, meaning you hold the phone sideways to take pictures. So if you hold it vertically to take a picture of something tall and skinny, it will be uploaded as sideways. But if you download it or email and somehow get it on your PC, then you can right-click it and rotate it before you send it to a web site.

Thanks Tom! I found out by accident if you double click on the image it will open right side up!

Joe, thanks for the idea of Danish oil, I would rather finish it than paint it too. This is the first knee I've carved and the wood texture is interesting. It's a bit of a mixed bag, at least in the case of this one. It mostly has a good grain, with the odd soft section mixed in.

I've always wanted to carve a cypress knee! I've seen them painted as Santas quite often. Yours is really well done. I cannot wait to see how you decide to finish it. (My phone always posts sideways too.)

Good job on creating a expression. I think it makes it more interesting.
Have you dampened it a little with water to see what it might look like with just a clear coat?

                        Re: Cypress Knee WIP

Greg, Thanks. I would not have thought of wetting it down. I did and it has some pretty interesting grain. I think a clear finish on the carved part would look good.

Thanks Dan, the good flow was pretty much an accident.
