I did as much as I wanted too on this carving. I asked on here what kind of oil to apply and went with Watco oil as someone suggested. I can at sometime apply a varnish but for now I will see what happens. Would you leave it with just oil or would you varnish it. Thanks

I can't say how to finish it, but I like your carving.

I think the oil looks good. I am partial to that type of finish. Nice carving.

        Re: Finished Native American

Great Native American Indian Neb. I must get back to doing some log carvings in the New Year as I miss doing characters in raw wood. As for your question on wood treatment, I expect you could get a variety of opinions. In my earlier days when I just put on an oil and didn't seal it afterwords, the grain darkened right away. Probably due mostly to the suns UV rays breaking down the oil. My understanding is that the oil serves as a preservative for the fibres as well as a sealer. I typically go over the oil with a satin or matt sealer as it provides a protecting layer on top of the oil. I try to put it on in layers so it doesn't build up and cause a glossy look. Basically, I put it on and remove access with a dry brush. I buff it after the first layer with a paper bag to take away the roughness. Others here may have different recipes so hopefully one of them will work for you.

Irishman>>>I like your concept and have done it that way before. I have used Thompson water seal and let dry then put on a not shinny varnish. Those carving look good today. I have just used varnish and no oil. The wood I use is old wood I find so it is not always in the best condition. I have to do a lot of cleaning before I can even start a project. My carving aren't that good but still like to finish them right. Thanks for all your comments.
