  • Bellamy-Style Eagle Carving

Here is the first carving that I have finished completely. It\\\\\\\'s my version of a Bellamy-style American Eagle. I have been interested in carving for a long time, but never thought I would have the time for another hobby. My wife surprised me a few years back with a set of Pfeil carving chisels. I have carved a few ornaments to date, but this is my first larger carving. It\\\\\\\'s carved from 8/4 basswood and is about 24\\\\\\\" by 9\\\\\\\".

I painted it with a mixture of craft and artist\\\\\\\'s acrylics. I switched to the artist\\\\\\\'s acrylics when painting the blue and red as the darker colors would not cover. While the artist\\\\\\\'s acrylics are more expensive up front, I found they cover in one coats and a little goes a long way.

Thanks for looking. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions to improve my work.

    Thanks,

    Tim

You have done this carving justice. Nice work for your first big one. Be proud of your version of it. The colors are really nice also. Maybe would show the carving alot clearer with a different background.

Hi Tim, great job on your Carving. My only suggestion would be is to put Stars on the Flags on the Corners. Piece to be proud of. Keep it up, I see some great pieces in your Future. Merle

Thank you all for the encouragement. Dan, I have added stars since these pics. I did not have the heart to paint them freehand. I stalked the aisles of a nearby craft store and came upon a three dollar paper punch in the shape of a star. I punched out several stars on masking tape and laid them over the field before painting them.

Great looking piece you have made here. Like the tip about painting stars since I would not freehand them either.

Nice job, Tim! I have carved one Bellamy eagle, and have just finished making a pattern for a second one. They are a lot of fun to carve, and make memorable pieces. Keep up the good work!

Here is a pic with the stars added. I just wasn\'t ready to freehand stars and risk having to redo the work.

The additional stars add a lot to an already nice piece.
