  • Ruger 10/22 carving

Decided since this was the only gun in my gun rack not carved I would carve it. Decided on a squirrel because I thought an elephant on a .22 would just be wrong

apparently it will only let me attach 5 photos per post so more to come.

    more progress pics:
Did this with Black\\\\\\\'n\\\\\\\'decker RTS\\\\\\\'s and a turbo carver.

I thought I was about ready to clearcoat it so I started lightly sanding the rest of the gunstock with some 1000 grit sandpaper, broke threw in a spot so since I had the stain out I decided to use a tiny brush and stain paint the acorns, and \\\\\\\"RUGER\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\'s with walnut stain, then ebony stain on the eye. Now I\\\\\\\'m thinking maybe I should carve some bark on the tree limbs? Maybe use oak stain on the oak leaves? Was also thinking about sanding off the existing checkering and replacing it with some carved fish scales?

I blew a couple disks in my neck last Spring, thought I was mostly healed up but this carving made me realize it\\\\\\\'s not healed so other than clearcoating it, I will need a few days not carving to let the pain back off a bit.

    What do you all think?

    Thanks ~Mike

I think it is amazing Mike, you deserve a rest, then get back to work.

      Very nice, Tom
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Boy Mike, I would not push yourself and make a big mistake. This is some fine carving sir. and it would be a shame to do something you should not do. Just take your time, what ever it takes. This stock will be around as a keep sake. . . JoeB

Very nice job! I would suggest that you consider taking one step too few rather than one step too many on the finishing. You don\'t want to detract from the beautiful work you did on the carving. I\'m just saying, be cautious now.

Hi Mike, you have just raised the price of that .22 cal. a bunch. Like the dark detailing on the Eyes and Acorns. Beautiful job of Carving and I\'m sure what ever finish you put on it it will be Outstanding and create a lot of great comments. Merle

              It\'s just beautiful!
But if you would have gone with an elephant, you could have called it Dreamer!

Absolutely gorgeous! Is that a beech stock then and not walnut?

I\'m not 100% certain but I believe it is Butternut. Looked online to find a replacement walnut stock but couldn\'t find any, they all seem to be butternut.

                      Thanks ~Mike

I had no idea they used butternut for stocks. I have a couple 10/22\'s, both very old, and they have walnut stocks.

And here are carvers complaining that butternut is becoming harder to get and more expensive.

Really nice work. I would be so intimidated to start carving on something useful like this. You, however, do beautiful work. I like the stain on the acorns and eye. I see what others mean about not overdoing it, but I think some stain on the leaves would look nice. Maybe some contrasting stains to darken the shadow areas. But don\'t do anything while you hurt, it won\'t go well, trust me.

                              Wikapedia:

Juglans cinerea, commonly known as butternut or white walnut, is a species of walnut native to the eastern United States and southeast Canada.
