  • /First tree carving of the season

    Hi Gang,
I hardly got my foot in the door and they were on the phone and wanting me to start the commissions for this year. So yesterday I took my apprentice and we set off to skin a large cedar tree. My grandson (apprentice) who is twelve can climb the tree's a lot better than his grandfather. This cedar I am hoping to put an eagle sitting on a woodspirit and a hand waving and not sure what else as yet. I will keep you posted as I go. Today is pouring rain so wont get any more done today.BTW I would love to hear any idea's you may have looking at the tree, it is always good to have an opinion.

    Hi Colin,
Nice to see you back from the west and carving again.
I was just noticing the pics with your grandson up the tree. What comes to mind for an idea is "Safety Harness".

Drop around when you get a chance, I have just finished an Eagle with it's wings extended flying ,attached to a small rock base.

      Colin ,
What a great tree to work with took one look and started seeing all kinds of things.

Looking forward to seeing where you take it to.

COOL subject and no finer apprentice than your grandson, being taught by his grandfather, spenting quality time together. That is so COOL!

Bet with both minds, you two will come up with some neat things for that tree

I see a warrior with a raised blade! Now it could be a medievel knight or man at arms, a Native warrior, a mad Viking, a Zulu warrior, or a P.O. wife with a rolling pin! But that's what I see!

Great looking young man helping out there Colin, you shouldn't be climbing trees anymore anyway! He must get his looks from his Grandmother!!!!!

Well that tree certainly dwarfs the piece I just finished and posted. I'll be watching to view your up-dates and photos. I'm inclined to go with the Viking suggestion and use the large limbs for excessories ie. spear, shield, etc.

                  Hi Gang,
Just a heads up it has rained and even snowed for the past week not good weather for tree carving and the winds have been gale force at times. So no progress to report on the tree carving. The weather is supposed to take a turn on Wednesday or Thursday so if so I will be starting it then. I will update as I progress and weather permits.

How about one eagle sitting using one of the upright branches and use the other for one flying with the wood spirit looking on. Just a thought.
