Re: New relief carved scene, dragon!

Oh Bob! This is fantastic ... I know exactly where it would fit in my house ...

You have movement and power. The spine ridge of your dragon wonderfully pulls him from the foreground with his face into the background where it disappears over the mountain edge.

The gouge marks in the mountain areas are delightful. They add texture to what could otherwise be just a bunch of plain roll overs. Very nice!

The story is histarically (spelling) and maybe even historical. Great work. Great shadows! Are his claws undercut?

Re: New relief carved scene, dragon!

Thanks folks, this one has been a Hoot!

Susan .... still lots of challenges left to slove, thogh the detailing work will help align or give the illusion of allignment a bit better. Getting the head, neck and body correct seems to be the challenge. The claws are undercut, mostly, still some detail to do, and much work to do on the rock and other detail, and more undercutting to do on the dragon. The dragon's exterior will be the next big challenge, scales, horns and mouth.

Lots of work ahead of me yet.

      Bob

Bob, what fun this piece is!! I've enjoyed looking back at the 'in progress' pictures and seeing it come to life. Can't wait to see the finished piece. Really nice work, you've got a great imagination!! Thanks for sharing it with us! Deborah

Re: New relief carved scene, dragon!

Work continues on the scene, cleaning up corners, undercutting, and some smoothing here and there. Not tackling the dragon itself too aggressively yet, letting my mind work on it some. The hunter is almost ready for burning, as is his wife. A bit of detailing there yet to do, but not much.

Considering scenery detail, just barren rock so far, not sure if I need to get any flora in the scene? Lots to consider, suggestions?

The spoon I did yesterday, from A pple wood. The first piece carved from that tree I got this spring. Love the colour.

Re: New relief carved scene, dragon!

Well, after a couple of unproductive days, I hit my stride today. I have heard, or read, threads lately about carvers having "off" days, or off pieces, and the week-end was one of these for me. I don't get upset, just relax and do something else, read, rest or put a movie on. The neurons always re-align (or maybe it's the stars) and I come back making better progress than ever. Today was one of those days.

Hacked away a lot of dragon wood, changed the shape of the body and achieved a much better relationship, perspective or aspect. I ended up taking a look at the body from above (imagine that on a relief carving)! The change in perspective gave me the info I needed about how the body comes out from between the rocks and shapes itself around them. Still some finish to do on the right side and foreleg, but almost ready to begin to burn in detail.

Ash .... the spoon is Apple wood, and a sweeter, smoother, wood you'll never find.

The work on the Dragon makes a dramatic change to the look and dimension of your carving. Keep posting us pics. I enjoy seeing the transformation.

Great job Bob! This is the first time I have gotten to actually see it. It takes me a little bit to scan over it all but it is very impressive. Great idea too. Thanks for sharing.

Finally began burning in some detail. Have to remember to take my time, and burn the wood and not myself. Lots to figure out yet!

Re: New relief carved scene, dragon!

I finally got some work done on the detailing of the dragonscene. I took the plunge and did some modifications on that pen tip. Torched it with propane till red hot and bent the shape with needlenose pliers. It works fine! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Please, comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Looking for advice on final appearance, some areas seem too dark, but nothing is final! Thanks,

                              Bob
