    Re: Working on a staff.

Ash, I don't know much--heck I know nothing about carving a staff, but I do know and can appreciate the creativity and skill that has gone into carving this staff. Nice Work!

Your new pictures really helped show what your doing with the wings - impressive. Its going to be quite a staff when finished. May get brave enough to try one myself someday.

                  I was drunk Mitchell!

they blended together ! Red Face

I used them for size reference , but I have to tell you , everyone is commenting on them. I should run a recorder, some of the things that have been said about the friendship staff have been super.

I have been asked three times if it could be reproduced and I have stated ...

NO it is one of a kind ......

Gary that cane is beautiful wow that will be a collectors item when your finished. Love the way you are using the grain of the wood. BTW yes it is easy to paint the mushrooms the brush was 3 inches wide. The brushes I am using on the santa you need glasses to see the bristles. But it is coming I have about 20 hours painting into it and it is still far from finished and that is the first coat.

                        Re: Working on a staff.

                        Thanks my friend,

seems like every thing I start to be simple just keeps changing .

Here is where I am working on the bottom of the staff. I was going to do a simple wood spirit , but decided to try something different and , although it is a wood spirit , I turned it to a greenman .

                          Re: Working on a staff.

Ash, are you using V tools and gouges mostly, or is most of this carving done with a knife? or are you using micro tools? I love the clean cuts you're getting with such detail in a round stick. Great job, and the flower bud with leaves is such a nice touch.

Garry, what a great piece that is! You certainly can move from 'relief' to 'in the round' carving with no problems! Thanks for sharing your work in progress with us! Deborah

                              Thanks Deborah
I think once I go back and really detail it , it will be really nice.

When I do relief I normally use gouges, but 90 percent of my canes and staffs are knife work. As far as V-tools are concerned , I really don't like using them with running grain. Even when extreamly sharp they can pull so bad. I do use them to increase depth in hair lines. But when I step to the large detailing I will switch from the knife to the skew. It will give the fine point edge I can't get with the knife without standing it up on edge and giving up control.
