  • First chainsaw carvings

My wife got me a makita 5012b electric chainsaw so I can carve in the shop the bears are my first attempt.
I orderd a dime tip carving bar and 1/4 chain for it that should really make it work nice.
My next project I think will be a woodspirit.

I would have expected a finely shaped stump Brian for a first timer but those bears you carved are really something. You've raised the bar pretty high so I don't know how your going to improve upon those fine carvings.

        Brian,
Those are pretty impressive for your first attempt. You should have seen my first chainsaw bear looked more like a pig. But some lady fell in love with it and it sold for a good buck so I shouldnt complain. You did those with a makita. That is impressive try a gas saw you will find that the roughing out goes a whole lot fasted and then use the electric for the detail. Trust me my friend well worth the investment I talk from lots of experience.

Holy cow! You've got the whole family with Papa, Mama, and the cubs! I really love chainsaw carvings and those look great!

I've only done about two or three chainsaw carvings myself (all bears) and like Colin said, they probably resembled pigs a little but one of my 5 footer's sold for $200.00 last summer in a closed bid auction fundraiser so I just don't know what to say about that

Thanks very much for posting them!

              Re: First chainsaw carvings

Thanks for the kind word everyone, I got my carving bar today and played around with it it really makes a big diference in control.

Thanks for the advice Colin I will block out the major parts with my husky then bring them in the shop for detail now that I got the new bar on the makita.

It was seeing the work of Colin and other chainsaw carvers that inspired me to try it myself.

I will have to work at it for a long time to get near what they acomplish.
It's a lot harder than cutting firewood!
