    Kenny I'll have to disagree with you on your base suggestions. There comes a time when doing a carving that any further additions will start to detract from the piece instead of add to it. I think Mike has reached that point.

    As for the shape of the base here's the rule I follow. When I do a single figure I try to keep the shape of a base even all round, i.e., square, round, oval. I sometimes do this for scenes too. When the scene is irregular I will trace the scene's shape and add 1/4" to 3/8" border, evening out any sharp indentations as I want the edge of the base to flow smoothly. Looking at Mike's piece you can see he already has a platform that the trunk and skeleton are setting on. As it's shape is rectangular that's the shape I'd make the base.
