Re: Been Baking instead of Carving

Here's some more from Fiona's Pine Branch Bakery. This is a two layer chocolate cake with cherry frosting, cut into six pieces, and each "piece" made up of three layers.....two cake and one frosting. It's all held together with "Marichino Cherry" posts. Every piece is a tiny bit different so it really is a puzzle, but it can still be put together willy-nilly for little fingers. I've stamped numbers in the bottom of each layer of each piece so Mom or Dad can get it right!

Got a strawberry pie puzzle in the oven now, and a tray of cupcakes, if I can find a 2" dowell......any ideas? Biggest I can find without buying a case of the darn things is 1 1/4"

      • dollar store baseball bat,?
      • cheap dough roller,
      • grand maws old table leg.
      • styrofoam?
or use a door lock set hole saw cut into a 2x4 from both sides and dowell the hole.

Very realistic and well done. Don't be surprised to find some peanut butter and jelly on one of those pieces of bread. Mike

          Al,
Check with a building supply house. A stair rail that mounts on a solid wall is close to 2" as well as a cloths closet rod.

Garon and Thomas, thanks, but I've looked at all those......stair rails are all 1 3/4" and closet Rods are 1 1/2" I need a full 2" to bore out to 1 1/2" for the pockets in a cupcake baking tin. The cupcakes will be 1 1/2" dowells with half 2" balls for the top. I'll keep poking around the internet and maybe can find a supplier for single items and not wholesale by the dozen.

None of the local building supplies either can or won't order the 2" ones. Neither the big box stores.

Good grief, Al ........ You've seen my shop. Don't I have ALL sorts of stuff? I have a 2" dowel. How much you need? I'll cut a chunk off extra long because it won't be clean or straight and mail it to you Monday morning.

Nancy, I need about 30"........12 2" pieces plus the kerf and waste. You are starting to be like my supply shop. Hope I can return the favors one of these days.

Boy - are we in luck -- my chunk of 2" stuff is exactly 36" long so I'll mail it like that. Jerry nor I have the faintest idea what sort of wood it is .... it sure ain't bass. It's hard and heavy.
I sure hope it works for what you need.

OK, this will be the last of my baking for a while. Just popped this strawberry pie out of the "oven". Had to number the pieces because grandaughter is starting to count already. Up to "3" but hey, she's only 13 months old! I guess grandpa can brag if he wants!

Re: Been Baking instead of Carving

OK, absolutely ( I think), no more baking after this one. I took Nancy's 2" dowell and used that for the "cup" parts of the baking pan. First they were glued to the underside of the pan, then they are bored out to 1 1/2" diameter, through the flat upper part.

Each cupcake is made from a length of 1 1/2" dia dowell with half a 2" diameter ball glued on top. The cherries are 1/2" Button plugs.

                        Thanks, Nancy!

Gee what a Blessed little Granddaughter.. I know children love the feel of wood.. I had a basketfull of wooden apples and they went to that every time. Even before they could talk they would bring the whole basket of apples to you.. one at a time .. Also had an elelphant puzzel .. Oh the food ones are so really neat.. What a good way to teach little ones with the bread and pasterys . Al ,your Grandchildren are very fortunate to have such a good Grandfather.. Charlotte
